CID officer who supervises Pori Moni case sent to retirement

The government on Thursday sent an additional deputy inspector general of police who has been supervising a case against actress Shamsunnahar Smrity, popularly known by her stage name Pori Moni, to retirement.

The home ministry in an order stated that Sheikh Omar Faruk, the additional DIG on current charge at Criminal Investigation Department, and Muhammad Abdur Rahim, the commanding officer at Armed Police Battalion unit-6 in Khagracchari, were sent to retirement citing ‘public interest’ on completion their 25 years of service in the Bangladesh Civil Service police cadre.

The government decision came on the day when the High Court summoned an investigation officer to appear before it on September 15 with documents of the narcotic case filed against Pori Moni to explain what materials existed with him to seek further put her on remand.

IO Kazi Golam Mostafa, also a CID inspector, prayed for remanding Pori Moni for 10 days in two phases after completion of her remand for four days for the first time in the case filed under Narcotics Control Act.

CID additional DIG Omar Faruk could not be reached for comments over phone while the CID officials said on Thursday he had been supervising at least eight cases related to recent arrest of the film actress, models and others.

Pori Moni was released on bail on Wednesday, less than a month after she was arrested in a drug case at her house in Banani area of Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

The actress walked out of Kashimpur Central Jail for Women in Gazipur on Wednesday morning, a day after she was granted bail in the case under Narcotics Control Act filed with Banani Police Station on August 5.

On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court judge KM Imrul Kayes granted bail to Pori Moni on Tk 20,000 bail bond till the submission of police report in the narcotics case.

Pori Moni and Raz were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion on August 4, 2021, in separate raids in Dhaka.

Pori Moni made headlines in June after she went on Facebook live accusing businessman Nasir U Mahmood and some others of trying to rape and kill her at Boat Club in Dhaka.
