Flood situation further deteriorates in Jamalpur, Tangail, and Faridpur

The overall flood situation in Jamalpur Tangail, and Faridpur further deteriorated as the water level in Jamuna, Padma, and Brahmaputra rivers continued to swell, flooding fresh areas on Friday.

In Jamalpur, over 100,000 people have been marooned in total 36 unions due to the rising water levels of Jamuna River.

The river swelled by 4cm and was flowing 63cm above the danger mark at Bahadurabad ghat point for the last 24 hours until 12pm on Friday, said the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

However, Md Abu Sayeed, BWDB executive engineer in Jamalpur, said that the water levels of the river were found to be in a steady state at 6pm on Friday.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Nayeb Ali said that floods have hit total seven upazilas in the district, and so far 65 families have fallen prey to river erosion.

According to local administration, 35 tons of rice and Tk2,700,000 have been allotted for each of the upazilas to help the flood victims.

Besides, total 155 flood shelters have been prepared across Jamalpur to help those affected by the flood.

Meanwhile, 2,000 of hectares croplands have also been submerged in the floodwater.

In Faridpur, the water level of the Padma River rose by 8cm in the last 24 hours till Friday morning and is currently flowing 69cm above the danger level.

Meanwhile, 18,600 families in total 234 villages under 10 unions of the district remain marooned for the past 18 days.

The flood-affected victims continue to suffer from an acute crisis of food and water as relief items provided by the local administration proved to be inadequate.

Decree Char Union Chairman Mehedi Hasan said that the aid provided for the flood-affected people is inadequate.

He said: “All the roads here are now submerged in floodwater. Boats are now our only hope. The food assistance that we received for distribution was not enough.”

In Tangail, three major rivers swelled in the 24 hours to Friday morning inundating new areas across the district.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water at several points of the Jamuna, Dhaleshwari, and Jhenai rivers were flowing above the danger level.

The water in Jamuna River is flowing above 64cm of the danger level while the Dhaleshwari above 73cm and the Jhenai above 88cm of the level.

Thousands of people have been marooned due to the flood, which is likely to damage the crops.

Tangail Deputy Commissioner Md Ataul Gani said that the district administration has so far allocated 40 metric tons of rice for the flood victims.
