PEC to be held in December on short syllabus

The state minister for primary and mass education Md Zakir Hossain on Monday said that the Primary Completion Examinations would be held in December this year considering the Covid-19 situation.

At a press conference marking the International Literacy Day 2021, he also said that the examinations would be held on short syllabus.

Besides, the government also had preparations to hold the annual examinations of other classes, he added.

Replying to a question, he also said that the classes of pre-primary would also be held for one day per week.

The state minister also said that the literacy rate in Bangladesh was 75.6 per cent in 2020 as per the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ ‘Report on Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics 2020.

The literacy rate was 74.7 per cent in 2019 in the country.

The ministry secretary Golam Md Hasibul Alam was also present at the press conference among others.

The government on Sunday in an inter-ministerial meeting decided to reopen all types of educational institutions from primary to higher secondary levels on September 12 after the institutions remained closed for more than 17 months due to the Covid outbreak in Bangladesh.

From September 12, in-person classes would be held every day of the week for the candidates of the Secondary School Certificate, Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations for the 2021 and 2022 academic years and for the Class V students.

The classes from Class I to Class IX, except Class V, would be held a day each week while the number of in-person classes would be increased if the coronavirus situation improves.

Since March 18, 2020, the classroom activities of the educational institutions across the country have remained closed due to the Covid situation, which are scheduled to be shut till September 11 after several extensions of the closure.
