College student’s death: Bashundhara MD, chairman sued over rape, murder

Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sohan Anvir, Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam and six others were sued today over the rape and murder of a college student in Dhaka's Gulshan area in April this year.

The six other accused are: Shah Alam's wife Afroza Begum; Anvir's wife Sabrina Sayem; Faria Mahbub Piyasha; Saifa Rahman Mim; landlord of the flat where the victim was staying Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon and his wife Sharmim Akhter.

Elder sister of the victim filed the case with the Eighth Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children's Repression of Dhaka.

After the hearing, Judge Mafroza Parvin recorded the statement of the complainant, took cognisance of the charges and directed Police Bureau of Investigation to submit a report on it within seven working days.

Abu Yousuf, additional superintendent (Legal and Media) at the Police Bureau of Investigation, told The Daily Star that they came to know the news from media, but are yet to get any official document.

Anvir has been made accused for allegedly murdering the victim after rape while Shah Alam and six others on charges of assisting Anvir.

On April 26, police recovered the body of the 21-year-old college student from her flat in Gulshan.

On July 19, Abul Hasan submitted the probe report to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court and appealed to it to relieve Anvir of the charges of abetting suicide.

About not conducting a DNA test of the lone accused in the case, the IO said in the report that it is not reasonable to collect and test a suspect's DNA samples solely on the basis of the complainant's allegations, without any supporting evidence.

On August 18, a Dhaka court accepted the final report and relieved Anvir from the charges of the case.
