Hathazari madrasa director Maulana Abdus Salam dies

Maulana Abdus Salam, one of the directors of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa in Chittagong’s Hathazari, has died. He was 85.

He died during a meeting of the madrasa management committee at 11:40am on Wednesday (September 8).

Earlier in the day, a meeting was called to determine the director-general of the madrasa.

At the meeting, the committee decided to make Abdus Salam the director-general of the madrasa.

However, before an official announcement could be made he fell ill, said Sheikh Ahmed, a member of the madrasa's board of directors.

Maulana Salahuddin Nanupuri, director of Jamia Islamia Obaidia Nanupur Madrasa in Fatikchhari, who was also present at the meeting, said: “Soon after the meeting decided to make Maulana Abdus Salam the director-general of the Hathazari Madrasa, he fell unconscious and was rushed to Hathazari Health Complex. There, the doctor on duty declared him dead.”

Hathazari Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Tahania Sabera Chowdhury confirmed to Bangla Tribune that Maulana Abdus Salam was brought to the health complex unconscious at 11:45am.

“At the end of the inital examination, I declared him dead. The cause of death could not be confirmed. He died before being brought to the hospital,” she added.

According to a source in the madrasa, Maulana Abdus Salam had been suffering from fever and cold for the past few days.

Maulana Abdus Salam had been serving as a senior teacher of the madrasa for a long time. Since the death of Amir Shah Ahmad Shafi of Hefazat-e-Islam, he also had been serving as the panel "Muhtamim" (adviser) of the madrasa management committee.
