HC expresses shock at Rajarbag Darbar Shareef ‘Pir’ for attempt to grab land by filing fake cases

The High Court today expressed astonishment at the activities of Rajarbag Darbar Shareef's 'Pir' (holy man) Dillur Rahman for allegedly filing 20 false cases through his disciples against a businessman, Ekramul Ahsan Kanchan, for grabbing his properties.

"The pir has filed the cases through his disciples for grabbing land properties. Is that right? A person's life becomes hell if a single case is filed against him or her," the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman said.

The bench said this after examining a probe report submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police which found that Rajarbag Darbar Shareef's 'pir' Dillur Rahman lodged 20 false criminal cases through his obedient disciples against Ekramul Ahsan Kanchan in an attempt to grab his (Ekramul) properties.

The probe report was placed before the HC bench while hearing a writ petition filed by Ekramul Ahsan seeking necessary directives.

The HC adjourned hearing of the petition for a week as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has issued an order on this issue following a petition filed by Afzal Hossain, a cook of Rajarbag Darbar Shareef, who filed a case against Ekramul.

The bench asked Afzal's lawyer Md Ozi Ullah to place the copy of the Appellate Division order before it in a week.

Petitioner's lawyers Zainul Abedin and Enamul Hoque Bosir earlier told The Daily Star that 49 criminal cases have been filed with different police stations and courts across the country against their client Ekramul Ahsan, a businessman from Shantinagar in Dhaka, on various charges including murder, rape, torture of women, extortion and human trafficking in last 11 years.

Ekramul has been acquitted and exempted of 36 cases and proceedings of the rest are ongoing, they said, adding that Ekramul has suffered in jail in connection with 40 of the cases.

They said the writ petitioner Ekramul is now out on bail.

Ekramul told The Daily Star that a group filed "fake" cases against him in 13 districts in order to grab his land, house and factory.

Following the same writ petition filed by Ekramul, the HC bench on June 14 this year ordered the CID to enquire into 49 criminal cases filed against Ekramul in order to find informants and complainants and to submit the enquiry report to the HC in 60 days.

On that day, the bench ruled that informants and complainants must submit photocopies of their national identity cards to the police stations or courts when they file cases so that police can find them during investigation.
