The United Nations is concerned over signs of shrinking civic space, growing inequality, and violence against women in Bangladesh.
UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo made this remark during the DCAB (Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh) Talk at the Foreign Service Academy today.
She stated that the global shrinking of civic space is a big concern, but a country that aspires for democracy -- is not healthy.
Mia Seppo also commented that a review of the Digital Security Act, as recommended by the UN, can help improve the situation.
The UN official said the Covid-19 pandemic has amplified the challenges of inequality, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and gender disparity.
As Bangladesh graduates from the LDC status, it will have opportunities, but has to face challenges of inequality and address them effectively, Mia Seppo said.
She also told reporters that the UN is at the final stages of starting operations for the Rohingyas in Bhashan Char.
The UN is already in talks with Bangladeshi NGOs working in Bhashan Char on how to work effectively there.
She said the Bangladesh government has made huge investments in Bhashan Char to make it a livable place, but there was, rather, negative publicity.
