15-year-old girl brutally murdered in Tangail, another found with critical injuries

The body of a 15-year-old teenage girl, with her throat slit, was found at a house at Elenga in Kalihati upazila of Tangail on Wednesday morning.

Another teenage boy, with multiple sharp weapons wounds, was also rescued from the same spot.

He is currently being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after surgery at the Tangail 250-bed General Hospital, said officials concerned.

Locals and police identified the deceased girl as Sumaiya Aktar. She was a ninth-grader at Elenga High School.

The injured boy was identified as Monir, 17, a classmate of Sumaiya at the same school. He also works as a transport worker.

They were found by locals in a bloody state on the stairs of the building owned by one Khokon in the College Road area under Elenga municipality around 7:30am, Kalihati police station OC Mollah Azizur Rahman said.

Police then recovered Sumaiya’s slit-throat body and rushed Monir to the hospital, he added. “Monir’s condition is critical.”

The hospital’s emergency department Medical Officer Dr Rajib Pal said Monir had critical sharp weapon wounds on different parts of his body, including his neck, throat and abdomen.

After an immediate surgery at the hospital, Monir was sent to DMCH for further treatment as his condition remains uncertain, said Resident Medical Officer Dr Shafiqul Islam Sajib.

The incident, meanwhile, has left the teens’ families, locals and police shocked and surprised, with everything wondering what could have happened that led to Sumaiya’s brutal killing and the murder attempt on Monir.

Sumaiya’s grief-stricken father Ferdousur Rahman said his daughter left home around 6am to go to a coaching class. “I found out about her murder around 8am. I do not know the injured boy found at the scene.”

Monir’s aunt Rozina Begum said Monir had left home on Tuesday night. “We could not reach or find him since then. We learned in the morning that he was hospitalized in a critical condition.”

She said they do not know Sumaiya either.

“We are looking into the matter,” said OC Rahman.
