Gang-rape, robbery on moving bus: 2 more culprits arrested

Police arrested two more members of a robbery gang responsible for raping a woman and looting passengers' valuables after taking control of a bus on Dhaka-Tangail highway on early Wednesday.

The arrestees, Md Abdul Awal and Nurnabi, were held by the members of Detective Branch of Police early today (August 5, 2022) from Gazipur's Kaliakair.

One mobile, which was snatched during the robbery, was also seized from Nurnabi.

With the latest, at least three people were arrested in connection with the case.

Tangail's Superintendent of Police Sarker Md Kaisar told the reporters at a press conference at his office around noon today (August 5, 2022).

On the basis of information provided by accused Raja Mia, who is now on remand, Awal was arrested around 5:00am from Tan Sutrapur area of Kaliakair during an operation led by officer-in-charge (OC) of Tangail (North) DB.

Later, based on the information given by Awal, Nurnabi was arrested around 9am during raids at different places. At that time, a mobile phone snatched during the robbery was recovered from Nurnabi, the police official said.

Awal (30) is son of Shukur Ali of Kanchanpur village in Kaliakair. Nurnabi (26) is the son of Bahaz Uddin of Dhonarchar Paschimpara village in Roumari upazila of Kurigram. He lives in Shilabaha Paschimpara area.

Earlier yesterday (August 4, 2022), a team of police arrested Raja Mia (30), driver of local Jhatika Paribahan, from new bus stand area in Tangail, said SP Mohammad Kaisar. He was placed on a five-day remand yesterday.

Ten to twelve young men, with backpacks, got on the bus at Hatikumrul intersection in Sirajganj around midnight.

They raped a woman and took away valuables from the passengers and injured many of the passengers with sharp weapons.
