Explain why fuel price hike shouldn't be declared illegal: HC to govt

The High Court today (August 16, 2022) questioned the legality of the government decision to increase the prices of petroleum products.

The court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why the notification issued by the ministry of energy and minerals increasing the fuel products should not be declared illegal.

The ministry on August 5 raised the price of diesel and kerosene by 42.5 percent and petrol and octane by 51.1 percent and 51.7 percent respectively.

Today, the HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo issued the rule following a writ petition filed challenging the legality of the government decision.

On August 8, Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ petition as a public interest litigation with the HC.

In the petition, he requested the HC to primarily pass stay order on the government notification issued over the fuel price hike.

Lawyers Eunus Ali Akond and Jyotirmoy Barua argued supporting the writ petition while Deputy Attorney General Arobinda Kumar Roy represented the state during hearing of the petition.
