Lawyer serving legal notice on FM faces death threats

The Supreme Court lawyer, who served legal notice on foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Sunday, asking him to resign voluntarily, faced death threats over cellphone on Tuesday.

The lawyer, Ershad Hossain Rashed, complained that he received threats of being shot dead on the court premises from different local and foreign numbers since the legal notice had been served on the foreign minister.

He mentioned two cellphone numbers from which he received threat calls, and later filed a general diary with the Shahbagh police on the day.

‘I feel insecure. The person that called me said that I must fix the problem, or else, he will shoot me dead on the court premises,’ said Ershad.

‘I inquired about his identification, and he replied that he killed people, and that was his identification.’

Bayzidur Rahman, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Zone), confirmed the matter, saying that the police were investigating it.

‘You have violated your oath as a minister and clearly violated the constitution,’ the lawyer said in the notice.

Ershad said that the notice served on Momen through a registered post asked him to respond to it within 48 hours after receipt or face legal action as per the law.

‘I am yet to get any response whether or not he received the notice. I have tried, but there is no response,’ he added.

At the recently held Janmashtami programme in Chattogram, foreign minister Momen said that he urged the Indian government to back prime minister Sheikh Hasina so she could stay in power.

Momen, also a member of the AL Sylhet city unit, said that Sheikh Hasina’s government was needed to ensure religious harmony in Bangladesh.
