Former adviser to caretaker govt Akbar Ali Khan dies

Former adviser to caretaker government and economist Akbar Ali Khan died on Thursday night. He was 78.

Akbar Ali Khan, also a freedom fighter, died at about 10:00pm, said his younger brother Kabir Hossain Khan over phone.

Akbar Ali Khan, also former cabinet secretary, was one of the most prominent faces of public service in Bangladesh who served different organisations, including the water resources ministry, the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, the Finance Division, the Cabinet Division and the World Bank.

Akbar Ali who was born in 1944 served as a bureaucrat until 2001.

Towards the end of 2006, he became one of the advisers to the caretaker government led by then president Iajuddin Ahmed. He, however, resigned along with three other advisers shortly before the military-backed interim government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed took over the power.

He also authored a number of books.
