Youth arrested for Facebook post on Hasina’s India visit

A youth was arrested in Dhaka in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for criticising prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India.

The youth, Towhidul Islam, was arrested at North Badda in the capital on Thursday and sent to jail by the court on Friday.

The court granted a-day remand in police custody, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit deputy commissioner for (Intelligence and Analysis) Mahmudul Hasan.

He said that Towhidul made a Facebook post criticising the PM’s visit to India, hurting image and sovereignty of the country.

Towhidul completed his studies in civil engineering and now working at an internet service providing firm.

DC Mahmudul said that Towhidul had been operating the Facebook account by his name and posting offensive comments.

He made a recent post that would harm Bangladesh-India bilateral relations, said the police officer.

The police seized a cell phone and a SIM card used to making the Facebook post.

A case under the DSA was filed against Towhidul with the Ramna police station and he was placed on a one-day remand in the case.
