A faction of the Chittagong University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, who put non-confidence on the unit president Rezaul Hoque Rubel and general secretary Iqbal Hossain Tipu, enforced a blockade on the university campus on Monday.
No classes and examinations were held on the campus due to the BCL’s blockade.
The faction led by vice-presidents Pradip Chakraborty Durjoy and Rakibul Hasan Dinar locked the university gates at about 6:00am, said a witness, Md Mizanur Rahman.
No shuttle train, teachers’ bus and staff bus ran on the university routes on the day, according to sources.
The BCL faction also locked the university’s vehicle depot in the morning, that’s why no buses could leave the depot, according to university’s assistant registrar Nurul Abser.
Pradip Chakraborty Durjoy told New Age that they demanded that the committee declared by the central BCL recently must be reorganised according to senior to junior and they fixed a timeframe for this by August 2022.
‘The central BCL didn’t take any actions over the issue. Moreover, CU BCL president and general secretary took an initiative to form hall committees ignoring the BCL leader’s non-confidence in them,’ he said.
‘We have imposed a blockade for an indefinite period. We would continue the blockade till they solved the issue,’ the BCL leader said.
CU proctor Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan could not be reached for comment.
The central BCL on July 31 announced a 375-member full-fledged committee of the CU unit, after they had constituted a two-member ad-hoc committee with Rezaul Hoque Rubel, a 2006-07 session student, as its president and Iqbal Hossen Tipu, a 2010-11 session student, as the general secretary on July 14, 2019, for a year.
Following the full-fledged committee announcement, a faction of BCL blocked the university for two days and the blockade forced the university authorities to suspend classes and examinations scheduled on August 1 and August 2.
However, the university authorities didn’t take any actions against the BCL activists who blocked the university for two days, which was not the university issue but BCL’s own issue, causing sufferings of students, teachers.
CU BCL unit made headlines in the media several times for their bad activities in recent times.
CU authorities expelled two BCL activists for their involvement in sexual harassment of a female student on July 17, 2022.
CU authorities expelled four more BCL activists for one year for their involvement in assaulting two female students at university central mosque area on September 16, 2021. The expelled BCL activists are the followers of CU BCL president Rezaul Hoque Rubel.
However, CU BCL activists engaged in clashes several times with each other and with local people in the last couple of years.
