Students on street at DU as BCL beats up protesters

Dhaka, Apr 11 (Just News): Students took to the streets at the Dhaka University early Wednesday as Chatra League activists reportedly beat up or threatened students for joining protests for reduction of quota in government jobs at different halls.

Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall unit Chhatra League president Iffat Jahan Esha and her fellows allegedly beat up Botany fourth year student Morsheda Akter for joining the protests. Earlier, they beat up three protesters on Monday.

Morsheda was rushed to nearby Government Employees’ Hospital with bleeding from her leg. People at the hospital, however, said that the injured was taken away from the hospital after about 2:00am.

Several hundred students from dormitories male students continued protests outside the Kabi Sufia Kamal hall while protesting residential (female) students were demonstrating inside the hall.

Students from others halls continued to gather around Sufia Kamal Hall, although Chhatra League activists locked the gates of the dormitories and took position in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence.

Ruling Awami League-backed student body Bangladesh Chhtra League distributed release among reporters on the campus at about 2:00am stating that Sufia Kamal hall unit Chhatra League president Iffat Jahan Esha was expelled from the organisation on charge of violating organisational discipline.

University proctor Golam Rabbani told reporters that Iffat Jahan Esha was also expelled from the univserity and the authority would take official measures in this regard today. He said that Morsheda was taken to the house of one of her close relations.

Protesting students went back to their halls with processions that paraded across the campus at 4:30am.
