Gaibandha-5: Voting again on January 4

Re-election will be held in Gaibandha-5 constituency on January 4 next year, the Election Commission announced today.

The EC made the decision at a meeting, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, at the commission office in the capital's Agargaon this morning.

The EC on October 12 stopped the by-polls in the constituency following electoral anomalies.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Election Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam said voting will start at 8:30am through EVM and continue till 4:30pm. As in the previous elections, all the polling centres will be under CCTV camera coverage, he said.

The returning officer of the previous polls has been replaced as per the recommendations by a probe committee.

Faridul Islam, election officer of Dhaka Region, will perform the duties of returning officer in the by-polls.

The 125 presiding officers, who were found negligent in performing duties during the October 12 by-polls, will not be allowed to discharge duties in the re-election.
