US concerned about reports of political violence in Dhaka

The United States Embassy in a statement on Thursday extended its condolences to the families of those killed and injured in Dhaka during Wednesday’s clash between police and main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

‘We are concerned about reports of intimidation and political violence in Dhaka and call on everyone to respect the rule of law and to refrain from violence, harassment, and intimidation,’ said US ambassador Peter Haas in the statement shared on embassy’s verified Facebook page.

He also said ‘We encourage government authorities to investigate these reports of violence and to protect the fundamental freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly’.

At least one activist was shot dead and over a hundred were injured as the police clashed with supporters of the BNP, stormed into the party office and arrested dozens, including senior leaders in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The clash erupted in front of the BNP central office in Naya Paltan in the capital, as hundreds of police in riot gear, with water cannons and armoured personnel vehicles swooped on the BNP leaders and activists.
