5 yrs on, families of many Rana Plaza tragedy victims get nothing

Dhaka, Apr 24 (Just News): Although five years have elapsed since the tragedy, families of many Rana Plaza tragedy victims were yet to get any compensation from the authorities concerned while many remain still traumatised.

The families of over 150 people, who had lost their lives in the building collapse, are counting their days with the hopes of getting compensations for the last five years.

On April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an illegally constructed building at Savar housing five garment factories, came down crashing, killing 1,175 people and injuring over 2,000 others.

According to a survey conducted by Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), some 159 workers were still missing and families of those missing people are deprived of getting any compensation. They have not received any compensation.

Meanwhile, different rights bodies, workers' organisations and left political parties have chalked out various programmes, including discussions, rallies and human chains, to mark the 5th anniversary of Rana Plaza collapse, the worst-ever tragedy in the country's multi-billion dollar ready-made garment (RMG) industry.
Different workers' bodies lit candles in front of the Rana Plaza site on Monday on the occasion.

They also formed a human chain when they demanded capital punishment of Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana.
