AL known for breaking promises: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party said on Sunday that the Awami League bluffed people in the past and that no election would be fair under Sheikh Hasina’s government.

‘We have to establish our own rights. No one from outside will fulfil our demands. The current Awami League government destroys the country’s economy. No election will be fair under Hasina. Of course, everyone must resist unitedly. Otherwise, no one will exist,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a discussion in Dhaka.

The Jatiya Ganotantric Party organised the programme at the National Press Club on the occasion of the sixth death anniversary of JAGPA founding president Shafiul Alam Pradhan.

Regarding the situation in the country, Fakhrul said that Shafiul Alam Pradhan dreamed of an equal and free Bangladesh and fought for it. But even today, that demand has not been fulfilled.

‘This government is not giving us an opportunity to stand. It was because they sold their heads. We are in a transitional period. Now the decision will be whether Bangladesh will be a democratic state or a dependent and fascist state?,’ Fakhrul said.

He said that the government was facing the country's people. RAB, police, and party thugs must suppress people's movements unjustly.

'When elections were held in 1996 under the caretaker government, today's Awami League made many promises. But the Awami League did not fulfil them. They oversaw two farcical elections,’ he said, adding that this government had destroyed the electoral system.

Presided over by JAGPA president Khandkar Lutfar Rahman and moderated by Youth JAGPA president Mir Amir Hossain Amu, Dhaka city north unit BNP convener Amanullah Aman, Dhaka city south BNP convener Abdus Salam, and JAGPA general secretary SM Shahadat Hossain spoke at the programme, among others.
