Noman, 16 other BNP leaders detained in Gazipur

Gazipur, May 6 (Just News): Police on Sunday detained BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman and 16 other leaders and activists of the party at Tongi of the district.

Contacted Kamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Tongi Police Station, said they arrested Noman and others for their involvement in damaging public transports and creating trouble on the street.

He said they have continued their drive to arrest other troublemakers till filing of this report around 8pm.

Gazipur district BNP president Fazlul Haque Milon said law enforcers picked Noman and 14 other their party leaders and activists up as they came out of the BNP's Gazipur City polls mayoral candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar's Tongi residence after holding a press conference over the High Court's stay order on the May-15 election.

Milon said several hundred law enforcers cordoned off Sarkar's residence confining many party leaders and activists, including him, to it.

Noman's personal secretary Nurul Azim Hiru said that police took the BNP leader to the Tongi Police Station dragging into their vehicle after his detention.

Earlier in the day, the High Court stayed the Gazipur City Corporation election scheduled to be held on May 15.

An HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order following hearing on a writ petition.

The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the inclusion of six moujas of Dhaka district into GCC should not be declared illegal.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations on March 31.

Awami League's Jahangir Alam and BNP's Hasn Uddin Sarkar are vying for the mayoral post in the polls.
