AL loots Tk 2 trillion from banking sector: BNP

Dhaka, May 10 (Just News): Accusing the ruling quarters of plundering Tk 2 trillion from the banking sector, opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday warned that the trial of the plunderers would be held someday in people's court.

"The banking sector has now been in an unstable and anarchic condition for corruption, plundering, disorder and lack of good governance, accountability and principles," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a press conference, he further said, "The leaders, workers, supporters of Awami League and people backed by them plundered around two lakh crore taka [2 trillion] of customers of different banks in the name of loan and resorting to various tricks, putting the banking sector in a serious trouble."

BNP arranged the press meet at BNP chairperson's Gulshan office to present the party's observations on the banking sector.

Fakhrul said the Awami League government is responsible for the widespread corruption and disaster in the banking sector. "The looters have got desperate for lack of good governance in the banking sector while the Awami-League-backed quarters are getting encouraged to plunder money from banks for lack of exemplary punishment for such offence."

He said the country and its economy will face a serious crisis due to the catastrophe in the banking sector. "The current illegal regime must shoulder its responsibility."

The BNP leader said the most banks are now facing severe liquidity crisis and, they are functioning borrowing money and the depositors are not getting their money back as their cheques are getting bounced frequently for lack of fund, creating worry among the bankers and their customers.

The BNP leader said the ownership of the banks is forcefully being changed defying rules and regulations as political influence on banks has increased. "The siphoning off money and the number of loan defaulters has also marked a sharp rise which is an ominous sign for the economy."

Mentioning that the size of corruption is very bigger as it took place with the support of the state, Fakhrul said the plunders are getting spared due to the government's shelter. "The country's economy and the future generation will be badly affected by the huge plundering. Corruption in the financial sector is fully state-sponsored. So the wrong-doers can walk free, even getting away with murder."

He said the government is least bothered about the plundering of lakhs of crore taka as it has no accountability to people. "People will never forgive such anti-people and anti-economy activities. They'll surely be tried in people's court someday."

BNP standing committee members Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were present at the press meet.
