Elderly couple found dead at their house in Jatrabari

A couple was found dead at separate places of their four-storey building in the capital’s Jatrabari area on early Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Shafiqur Rahman, 60, and his wife Farida Yeasmin, 50. Shafiqur Rahman used to work at Janata Bank.

Police said the couple used to live at the second floor of their four-storey building.

Romjan Ali, sub-inspector of Jatrabari police station, said that they received a call from the National Emergency Service 999 at about 6:30am.

Later, they recovered Shafiqur’s body from the parking area of the four-storey building and Farida’s body from their bedroom at the second floor.

Jatrabari Police Station inspector (operation) Md Tawhidul Haque Mamun said both bodies bore injury marks.

The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations, added the inspector.

‘We assume miscreants hacked them to death anytime at night. The incident is being investigated,’ inspector Tawhidul said.

Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station, said that the reason behind the likely murder could not be known yet. ‘Reasons behind the murders will be known after investigation,’ he said.

Initially, it is believed that when Shafiqur Rahman was returning after Fazr prayers in the morning, he was first attacked. Later, the miscreants killed his wife at the second floor, said inspector Tawhidul.

The main gate of the building and the door of couples’ flat were found open. The almirah was also found open.

The upper two floors and one side of the ground floor were rented out.

Their son Emon, a sub-inspector of Special Branch of Police, and his wife also live in the house.

However, they were not present at the house on Wednesday night.
