HC orders compensation to family of another road crash victim

Dhaka, May 22 (Just News): The High Court on Tuesday ordered authorities concerned to pay compensation to the family of Nazim Uddin who was killed in a city road crash on 17 May.

However, the same day, the Supreme Court suspended a High Court order for giving compensation to the family of Rajib Hossain who first lost hand in road crash and eventually died of severe injuries.

In Nazim’s case, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why Tk 10 million compensation should not be given to the family.

Secretary of the home affairs ministry, the chairman and managing director of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the inspector general of police, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, owners of Srabon Paribahan and Monzil Paribahan and others concerned have been asked to reply the rule.

An HC bench comprising justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and justice AKM Zahirul Haque passed the suo moto order taking cognisance of newspaper reports published on the accident.

On 17 May, Nazim Uddin, senior executive of advertising department of Dhaka Tribune, was killed as a bus hit his motorcycle while it was trying to overtake another bus and ran over him, on the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in the capital's Jatrabari area.

Earlier on 8 May, the HC bench of justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and justice AKM Zahirul Hoque issued an order to provide Tk 10 million as compensation to the family of Rajib Hasan who lost his right hand after it got stuck between two buses at Bangla Motor in the city on 3 April.

He succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on 17 April.

However, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed a HC order that directed BRTC and Sajan Paribahan to pay Tk 10 million in compensation to the family of Rajib Hossain.
