Dhaka, May 30 (Just News): Today is the 37th death anniversary of shaheed president Ziaur Rahman, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party founder.

BNP and its front and associate organisations and socio-cultural organisations have taken elaborate programmes to observe the day while BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is in jail.

BNP and its front and associate bodies took 10-day programmes between May 25 and June 5 marking the day.

Zia, the 7th president of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981, was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981.

Zia came to limelight by broadcasting a declaration of independence in March 1971.

He was a sector commander and led the Z Force in the Liberation War in 1971.
He was adorned with gallantry award Bir Uttom for his contribution in the war.

Zia reached the helm of power on November 7, 1975. He became president of the country in April 1977. He founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1978.
Zia was born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari village in Bogra.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a message on Tuesday marking Zia’s 37th death anniversary, said that the ideal, philosophy and programmes of late Zia were safeguards to protect independence, multiparty democracy, development and progress of the country.

As part of the 10-day programmes, BNP held discussion at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The party flag would be hoisted at half-mast and black flag would be hoisted atop at BNP central office and all its unit offices across the country at 6:00am today while leaders and activists of BNP led by its secretary general is scheduled to place wreaths and offer fateha at the graveside of Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka at 10:00am to be followed by prayer session on the grave premises.

Khaleda Zia used to lead the party leaders and activists at Zia’s graveside and distribute food and clothes among destitute people in Dhaka.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia was jailed for five years in Zia Orphanage Trust case by the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5 on February 8 and was sent to erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road in old Dhaka.

Doctors Association of Bangladesh, a platform of pro-BNP physicians, would hold a daylong free medical camp and provide treatment free of cost in front of BNP central office at Nayapaltan and Dhaka city BNP north and south units would distribute clothes and iftar items among the poor today. Zia Smriti Pathagar would hold book fair in divisional cities while Jatiyatabadi Chhatradal would organise daylong photo exhibition at National Press Club on the day.

Leaders and activists of BNP and its front and associate organisations would wear black badges to mourn the death of their leader.

BNP’s all other units across the country would hold discussions, distribute iftar and clothes among destitute people as per their convenience.
