3 more killed in alleged gunfights

Dhaka, Jun 1 (Just News): Three suspected drug peddlers were killed in separate reported gunfights with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and DB police in Rajshahi and Gazipur district on Thursday night and early Friday.

At least 135 alleged drug traders were killed in reported gunfights since 12 May.

In Rajshahi, Belal and Nazmul, the top listed drug traders, according to the home ministry list, of Karamja village were killed in a ‘gun battle’ in the village of Paba upazila on Thursday night, reports UNB.

Tipped off, a team of RAB-5 conducted a drive in the area around 11:00pm, said its deputy commander major SM Ashraful Islam.

Sensing presence of the force, the alleged drug traders reportedly opened fire on the RAB troops.

When the RAB members fired back in ‘self-defence’, the ‘drug pushers’ fled the scene.

The RAB officials said they recovered two people injured with bullets and took them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Huge drugs and arms were also recovered from the scene, they claimed.

The deceased were wanted in several cases, RAB said.

In Gazipur, Quamrul Islam Quamu, 38, a suspected drug peddler, was killed in a reported gunfight with DB police in Bhadun of Kaliganj upazila around 1:30am, said DB officer-in-charge Amir Hossain.

Police arrested Quamrul from Ulukhola area in the upazila along with 4,000 pieces of yaba tablets and a private car on Thursday.

He was wanted in 14 cases, the law enforcement said.

The gunfight took place as the associates of Quamrul opened fire on the law enforcement while he was being taken to DB office from Kaliganj police station, said police.

Three policemen were injured during the gunfight.
