ASK wants judicial commission to probe Ekramul killing

Dhaka, Jun 3 (Just News): Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) on Sunday urged the government to form a judicial inquiry commission to investigate all the incidents of killing in 'gunfights', including that of Teknaf councillor Ekramul Haque.

In a statement, the rights body also demanded the government ensure the safety of Ekramul's family.

Referring to the audio clips containing the recorded conversations between Ekram and his daughter and wife before and when he was shot dead by law enforcers, the rights body said it has created panic among people over 'planned killings' by law enforcers in the name of 'gunfight'.

The statement termed 'regrettable' the remark of the government high-ups that 'one or two mistakes may occur' in such a drive.

ASK said the impact of such incidents is far-reaching and called for immediately stopping the 'gunfight' in the name of anti-drug operation.

It said, "To eradicate any kind of crime from society, the state must take a tough position, but extrajudicial killings in the name of crime elimination can never be justified."
