Dhaka, July 21 (Just News): Two suspected drug traders were killed in reported gunfights with police and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Kushtia and Chapainawabganj districts early Saturday.
Among the deceased one is Shamsuddin Syam, 38, son of a certain late Tobarok Miah of Khemirdiyar in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia.
In Kushtia, Shamsuddin Syam was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Bakapool area of Bheramara upazila.
He was wanted in eight drug-related cases, claims police.
On information that a gang of robbers gathered for drug trading, police conducted a drive in Bakapool area around 3:00am, said Bheramara police station officer-in-charge Aminul Islam.
Sensing presence of the law enforcement, the drug traders opened fire on them, forcing police to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, he said.
The gunfight left Shamdsuddin injured with bullet. He was then taken to Bheramara Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, the OC added.
In Chapainawabganj, a suspected unidentified drug trader was killed in what the RAB said a gunfight with them in Sundarpur of sadar upazila around1:30am.
The force later recovered a pistol, four bullets, one magazine and 117 bottles of phensedyl from the spot.
Four RAB members were also injured in the incident, said RAB-5 camp commander Syed Abdullah Al Murad.
The law enforcement’s versions of the incidents were, however, not verified independently as no versions of those were available immediately either from any witnesses or from members of the victims’ families.
With the latest deaths, at least 146 people were killed in alleged gunfights with law enforcement members while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since15 May.
