OC handed over Amar Desh editor Mahmudur to terrorists: BNP

Dhaka, July 22 (Just News): BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday alleged that the Kushtia police handed over Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman to terrorists pushing him out of the courtroom.

He condemned the attack on Mahmudur Rahman in Kushtia allegedly by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League that left the Amar Desh acting editor injured.

"The police failed to take effective step. It can be said that the officer in charge (OC) forcefully handed him over to the terrorists," Mirza Fakhrul was quoted to have told a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office.

The BNP leader observed that all the state machinery and democratic institutions have turned into ‘Awami League puppets’.

“All the state machinery have now completely collapsed, and Bangladesh has turned into a failed state as no institution functions here," he said.

He alleged that the police men are now working at the behest of the Awami League. “They (AL men) have also established control over the judiciary. All the democratic institutions have become the ruling party’s puppets.”

The BNP held the briefing to protest against the attack on Mahmudur Rahman allegedly by the BCL men on the Kushtia court premises.

Fakhrul said as the BCL activists confined Mahmudur Rahman to a courtroom, he sought protection from the court.

Though the court asked the officer-in-charge to come to spot and ensure the security of Mahmudur, he said the police officer did not comply with the court order.

“The police unfortunately didn’t take any steps though the highest authorities were also informed about the matter,” Fakhrul added.

After the incident, Fakhrul said the government should have ensured his treatment and sent him to any hospital with police protection. “But, they didn’t do it. We strongly condemn and protest the incident.”

He demanded immediate arrest of those who were involved in the attack and take judicial action against them.

The BNP leader said those involved in such unfair acts will not be brought to justice until the fall of the current regime.

BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were, among others, present at the press meet.
