Dhaka, July 24 (Just News): Forced to leave campus under intimidation for writing in favour of quota reform, Chittagong University’s Assistant Professor Maidul Islam has now been sued by the activists of ruling quarter.
Chhatra League’s legal action against the teacher – who seeks security to return to campus – comes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s stern warning against “excesses” in this issue.
Chittagong University Chhatra League’s Executive Member Md Ifterkhar Uddin Ayaz sued his teacher under ICT Act last night. The case has been filed with Hathazari Police Station.
Allegation is, he has defamed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post.
Belal Mohammad Jahangir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station, confirmed it.
Meanwhile, a group of teachers and employees under banner Bangabandhu Parishad demonstrated at campus demanding punishment of the teacher.
CU BCL have been strongly resisting any quota reform demonstration – the last such incident occurring on July 19, where they not only assaulted demonstrating students, but also raised fingers on the face of some teachers.
Maidul Islam of sociology department left the campus along with his family on July 15 after Chhatra League men issued public threats directing him and his family. He has notified the matter to university authorities, but to no avail.
The following day, BCL searched for him at his office and lodged a complaint against Maidul to the department chairperson. They demanded necessary steps against him, claiming that Maidul has been instigating students and teachers and spreading hate speech against the government on Facebook.
The next day, a group of BCL men submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor against two teachers including Maidul accusing that they had posted defamatory remarks against the prime minister and had urged the students to create anarchy on the campus.
The BCL men have also announced the teachers “unwelcome” on the campus.
However, Maidul maintains that he never wrote derogatory remarks against the premier.
