BNP demands resignation of CEC

Dhaka, Aug 10 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday demanded immediate resignation of chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda for his statement that there was no guarantee of any irregularity in the next general elections.

At a discussion at National Press Club, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said the CEC lost his rights to stay at his post.

Chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday said that there was no guarantee that there would be no irregularity in the next general election scheduled for January 28, 2019 at the latest.

‘I cannot assure that there will be no irregularity anywhere during such a huge public election,’ the CEC told reporters after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Challenges for Physically-challenged Voters to Participate in the Electoral Process’ at the Election Training Institute in the capital.

Moudud said the CEC could have made such true remarks out of conscience, but four other commissioners of the Election Commission said they differ with the CEC.

‘The CEC has lost his rights to stay at the post’, he said.

‘We demand his immediate resignation,’ Moudud said.

Nagarik Adhikar Andolan Forum organised the discussion on attacks on students and journalists during the safe road protest and sedition charge against top BNP leaders over the protest.

Moudud said the attacks on the juvenile students would be a ‘backfire’ against the government.

‘The government has to pay hefty price for the attack on them’, he said.

He demanded immediate and unconditional release of 22 students who were sent to jail after arrest over the safe road protests.

Moudud criticised the government for its failure to arrest the attackers of US ambassador Marcia Bernicat.

He also criticised the arrest and torture in custody of acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam.
