56 Bhashani university teachers resign protesting BCL assault

Dhaka, Oct 8 (Just News): Fifty-six teachers of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail today resigned from their administrative posts after Bangladesh Chhatra League men allegedly misbehaved with two of their fellows.

The teachers including two regent board members, four deans, four provosts and 14 departmental chairmen and 32 others submitted their resignation letters to the university’s registrar, Touhidul Islam, this noon, campus sources said.

The BCL leaders allegedly forced the two teachers -- Anwar Hossain and Mohiuddin Tasnim of the Physics department -- to allow a female student, who did not quality in the previous semester, take part in an examination.

As the teachers told them that the student could not take the exam as she failed the last semester, the BCL men led by the university unit BCL President Sajib Talukder, vice-presidents Imran Miah and Adrita Panna, and joint-secretary Jabir Iqbal reportedly hurled abuses and even tried to assault them, sources said.

The department published the 2nd year’s 2nd semester exam results on Saturday, in which the student of the department failed. The 3rd year’s 1st semester exams started the very next day, they added.

BCL leader Sajib said they “did not misbehave” with the teachers and that “just an altercation had occurred”.

Contacted, Prof Mohammad Alauddin, vice-chancellor of the university, said that he held a meeting with the regent board this afternoon to take a decision regarding the incident.
