Elections to be genuine

Dhaka, Nov 24 (Just News): The Election Commission needs to avoid “systemic manipulation” during the polls to ensure that biased people are not working within the commission, Shusashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar said today.

“The elections need to be genuine. Otherwise, a massive crisis will ensue,” Badiul said at a seminar arranged by Center for Governance Study (CGS) on ‘Electoral Politics and People’s right to Vote’ at BISS auditorium.

Munira Khan, an election observer and also the president of Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA), said that voters need to be assured that they can have faith on the electoral process and to make sure it is a democratic election.

While addressing the seminar, BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo said there is no environment for free and fair elections.

Mahbubul Alam Hanif of Awami League, who also attended the programme, said voters are unable to cast votes for candidates of their choice as there are many alliances made up of small political parties now.

Hanif also dismissed doubts over the elections and said “elections will take place.
