Dhaka, Dec 4 (Just News): At least 234 more aggrieved aspirants on Monday submitted appeals with the Election Commission challenging the cancellation of their nomination papers by the returning officers during the Sunday’s scrutiny for the next general election slated for December 30.
With these, the number of appeals reached to 318.
On Tuesday, 68 of Dhaka division, 56 of Chattogram division, 21 of Rajshahi division, 28 of Rangpur division, 18 of Khulna division and 15 of Sylhet division submitted appeals with the commission, officials said.
On the second day, immediate past Jatiya Party secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader and aspirant for Patuakhali 1, Jatiya Party aspirant film actor Masud Parvez aspirant for Barishal 2, BNP’s aspirant Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu for Natore 2, Sabira Sultana of Jashore 2 and Mir Mohammad Helaluddin for Chattogram 5 and independent aspirant Imran H Sarkar for Kurigram 4 were among those who submitted the petition.
After filing his appeal with the commission, Ruhul Quddus told reporters that a good number of ruling Awami League leaders are contesting in the polls with convection statues.
He said that his and most his party aspirants’ nomination papers were rejected following the government’s instruction.
On the other hand, election commissioner Mahbub Talukder on Tuesday said the commission will neutrally dispose of appeals filed against the decisions of the returning officers over rejection and acceptance of nomination papers.
‘Those who are filing petitions, the appeals will be disposed of in legal and neutral ways,’ he said while visiting booths set up to receive appeals on the premises of Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday noon.
Replying to a question whether the EC will ensure justice in disposal of the appeals, he said the justice is a relative matter. But the EC will take the decision hearing all partners of the appeals, he added.
Mahbub said he just came there to visit the booths to know whether the petitioners face troubles in filing their appeals.
The commission on the day set up eight booths on its secretariat’s premises for registering petitions from the aggrieved aspirants of the country’s eight divisions.
The commission on Monday started receiving appeals at its reception room and the commission, the appeal authority, will also receive petition on Wednesday.
The commission will dispose of the petitions on December 6 and 8 following hearings.
The quasi-judicial body, EC, has already set up the hearing rooms at the Nirbachan Bhaban.
Even if anyone is aggrieved with the commission’s decision in this regard, the person will go to the High Court to seek redress.
The returning officers on Sunday accepted total 2,279 nomination papers and turned down 786 others submitted in the country’s 300 constituencies to contest the 11th parliamentary polls.
