EC asked to be unbiased to ensure credible polls

Dhaka, Dec 22 (Just News): A total of 30 eminent citizens including Photographer Shahidul Alam and Dhaka University professor Geeti Ara Nasrin today called upon the Election Commission to be completely transparent, accountable and unbiased to ensure credible elections.

Under a platform ‘In favour of citizens’, Professor Anu Mohammad, Ahmed Kamal, Shahdin Malik and Shirin Huq, among others, gave a list of five recommendations to relevant stakeholders to ensure that the polls are free and fair.

At a press briefing at Dhaka Reporters Unity, Geeti Ara Nasrin read out a joint statement where the citizens also asked the EC to make sure that the administration involved in the electoral process can discharge their duties in an unbiased manner

The written statement undersigned by 29 eminent citizens including writers, researchers, professors and photographers also placed recommendations like:

- Journalists, national and international monitors should be allowed to discharge their duties properly

- All routes of communication should be made free and accessible

- Arrests, attacks and all sorts of violence needs to be stopped. Those found involved with the violence need to brought under the rule of law. Those arrested under false cases should be immediately released.
