BNP candidates attacked in Dhaka, Chattogram

Dhaka, Dec 23 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s candidate for Dhaka 9 Afroja Abbas and for Chattogram 2 Azim Ullah Bahar came under while electioneering at Maniknagar of Dhaka and Fatikchari of Chattogram on Sunday.

Afroja Abbas and her supporters came under attack again on Sunday allegedly by Awami League activists while conducting electioneering in the Dhaka’s Maniknagar area, leaving an unspecific number of people, including some journalists, injured.

Talking to reporters at her Shahjahanpur residence in the afternoon, Afroja said she along with her supports was going to Mugdha’s Maniknagar in a procession around 1:00pm to conduct electioneering.

‘As our procession reached Maniknagar crossing, a group of ruling party men, led by local Swechchhasebak League leader Thunda Babu, swopped on us and bet my supporters and journalists with rods and sticks,’ she said.

The BNP candidate said a photojournalist, Haider Ali, was injured seriously as the attackers beat him mercilessly.

She also claimed the attack left around 100 of her supporters injured.

Afroja said she was forced to return home halting her campaign following the attack.

She said she will lodge a complaint with the Election Commission in this regard as she could identify most of the attackers.

On December 18, ruling party men reportedly attacked Afroja and her supporters during their electioneering in the city’s Khilgaon area.

On December 12, Afroja’s campaign convoy came under attack twice at Kamalapur and Madartek in the city by ruling party followers.

In Chattogram, Azim Ullah Bahar and 19 of his supporters were injured as Awami League men allegedly attacked a procession in favour of Sheaf of Paddy in Fatikchari of Chattogram .

Mohammad Ibrahim, personal assistant of the BNP contestant, claimed that the followers of AL leader Taiyab swooped on Bahar and his activists around 1:00pm when they brought out a procession at Muhammad Takirhat Bazar.

The attack left at least 20 BNP men, including Bahar and former Supreme Court judge Faisal Mahmud Fayezi, injured, he said.

Ibrahim also claimed that the attackers smashed the BNP contender in the head.

The injured were taken to local upazila health complex.

Babul Akter, officer-in-charge of Fatikchhari Police Station, said a group of miscreants attacked the activists of Bahar while electioneering, leaving 10-12 people injured.
