Khaleda Zia appeals against HC over candidature

Dhaka, Dec 23 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia moved the Appellate Division with a petition on Sunday, challenging a High Court decision that barred her from contesting the upcoming general election.

Her lawyer Mir Helal said the Chamber Judge’s court would hear the petition on Monday.

Khaleda Zia’s nominations for Feni 1, Bogura 6 and Bogura 7 constituencies were rejected by returning officers. She had moved the High Court after the Election Commission upheld the decisions.

But the High Court rejected plea on December 18.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the BNP chief would be unable to contest the election.

Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister, was jailed for five years in February in a corruption case by a Dhaka court. The High Court doubled her sentence on October 30.

She was also convicted in another corruption case and sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by a special court on October 29.
