Dhaka wears deserted look before polls day

Dhaka, Dec 29 (Just News) : The capital, Dhaka, wore a completely deserted look today as there were very few vehicles on the roads just a day before the polls.

Since morning, there were very few private cars and rickshaws on the streets and almost no motorcycles on the roads, reports our photojournalists from the spot.

The Election Commission banned motorbikes except for those used by journalists or those carrying newspapers from this morning to January 1 midnight.

At Bijoy Sarani, police were seen stopping two motorcycles at a check post and asking for documents but the motorcyclists said they did not know there was a ban on motorbikes.

Inside the city, busy thoroughfares like Dhanmondi-27, Asad Gate, Kalabagan and Panthapath were more or less empty since this morning.

Even the highways which usually experience bumper to bumper traffic, were found empty too, reports our photojournalist from the Hemayetpur point at Dhaka-Aricha highway.

All motorised vehicles on road an waterways will remain banned for 24hrs from midnight of December 29.

Thousands of city dwellers have already left Dhaka city to cast their votes from their village home. Many have also left the city for their village homes as December 30 (Sunday) was declared a public holiday.

Besides, private car owners in the city preferred not to take out their vehicles.

Our photojournalists also found very few police check posts in Dhaka since morning.
