Mobile internet goes to 2G, to continue till midnight Sunday

Dhaka, Dec 29 (Just News) : Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on Saturday afternoon suspended 3G and 4G mobile phone services across the country and it will continue till midnight Sunday.

The instruction of the commission came to mobile phone operators in the noon asking them to downgrade mobile internet to 2G demanding immediate implementation a day ahead of Bangladesh goes in 11th Jatiya Sangsad elections on Sunday, said sources among telcos.

Bangladesh also experiences such downgrade of mobile internet service for 10 hours on Thursday night.

Mobile phone operators provide internet connection to 8.6 crore users, representing 93.68 per cent out of the country’s total 9.18 crore internet connections.

Rest of the 58 lakh or 6.20 per cent users are connected through broadband internet.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank on Thursday suspended all mobile financial services for 48 hours from 5:00pm on December 28 ahead of the general election.

According to a circular of the central bank issued on the day, all MFS providers must keep their mobile-based financial services suspended from 5:00pm on December 28 to 5:00pm on December 30.

However, transaction through personal MFS account up to Tk 5,000 in a day during 5:00pm on December 29 to 5:00pm on December 30 will be allowed, the circular said.

Apart from these, around 100 websites remained blocked for almost a month following instruction from the government high-ups.
