Two killed in overnight violence at polls get underway

Dhaka, Dec 30 (Just News): At least two people were killed in overnight violence as voting for the 11th parliamentary elections got underway on Sunday amid a climate of fear and allegations of intimidation by opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliances.

Niamat Ullah, the officer in-charge of Patia police station in Chattogram, confirmed a juba league activist was killed in alleged attack by a gropu of miscreants in the upzila around 10:30pm.

The victim was identified as Din Mohammad. Police said his brother was also injured in the attack.

The officer-in charge of Chandraganj police station in Lakshmipur said they recovered an unidentified body of man after a clash between two groups in the area.

The OC could not confirm if the victim belonged to any party.

A total of 10,42,38,677 voters — 5,25,72,365 male and 5,16,66,312 female — are listed to exercise their franchise as the polling began 8:00am will be continued until 4:00pm without any break in 299 constituencies out of 300 seats.

Election to Gaibandha 3 was suspended following the death of a candidate.

Some 1,861 candidates including 1,733 persons nominated by political parties and 128 independent candidates are contesting the polls.
