EVM showing problems, slowing down voting

Dhaka, Dec 30 (Just News): Electronic voting is showing problems across different voting centres in Dhaka-13, slowing down voting process and creating queues.

At least eight voting centres in this seat has found incidents of malfunction almost common at all centres.

This constituency is the only constituency in Dhaka that is seeing electronic voting. The seat has Awami League candidate Sadek Khan contesting against BNP’s Abdus Salam and Jatiya Party’s Shafiqul Islam.

The Daily Star visited Badshah Faisal Institute where three voting centres have been set up. Several machines in the centre could not read fingerprints.

“One of our machines stopped working for about 45 minutes,” Presiding Officer Shuvro Dev Bisha said, “In that booth, we counted only six votes in one hour.”

Another presiding officer of the centre, Md Sarafuddin, acknowledged the problem and said that the elderly were having the most problems.

Mazharul Haque, the presiding officer of the remaining centre, told The Daily Star: “20 per cent of the fingerprints are not matching. In that case, we are allowing voters to vote after confirming their identity.”

The Daily Star also visited Rayerbazar Community Centre, where two centres were set up. The male voting unit had malfunctioning EVMs, but the presiding officer did not agree to talk about it. A queue was seen building up outside the centre.

Also, similar problems were seen at the two centres of Mohammadpur Government Primary School and Mohammadpur Girls High School. However, the presiding officers did not agree to comment over the issue.
