21 killed in election violence

Dhaka, Dec 30 (Just News) : At least 21 people were killed in electoral violence in 13 districts as the voting ended in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections on Sunday afternoon.

The killings were reported in Chattogram, Rangamati, Rajshahi, Cumilla, Cox’s Bazar, Bogura, Brahmanbaria, Noakhali, Narsingdi, Sylhet, Gazipur, Jashore, and Dinajpur.

 

In Chattogram, a man died in a clash between two groups in Banshkhali upazilla, our correspondent reported.

A man was killed in a clash between Jatiya Party activists and police in Banskhali upazila of Chattogram early Sunday.

Jatiya Party members identified the deceased as Ahmed Kabir (55).

JP activists claimed that around 3:00am Ahmed Kabir was killed in police firing during the clash that took place in Boroitola area of the upazila.

Asked, officer in-Charge of Banskhali Police Station Kamal Hossain told our correspondent that Ahmed Kabir died in a clash, in which five policemen were also injured.

A local Juba League leader was killed and 10 were injured in a clash with BNP-Jamaat men in Kawkhali upazila of Rangamati, reports our Rangamati correspondent.

The deceased was identified as Bashir uddin, 35, was general secretary of Ghagra union Juba League, said Rangamati deputy commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid.

The clash took place Ghagra’s Rangipara villege at 6.00 am where several shots were fired.

Later, Bashir and another were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where on duty doctor declared Basir as dead, said Mamunur Rashid.

Md Alauddin, sub inspector of Chattogram Medical College and Hospital police outpost told New Age, Bashir was brought dead at the hospital around 10:30am.

In Rajshahi a Juba League activist was killed in Mohonpur upazila during a clash, said Rajshahi police super.

The victim Mirajul Islam was stabbed to death at Pakuria High School centre in Mohonpur.

Awami League candidate for Rajshahi 3 Ayen Uddin said Miraj was an activist of Chhatra League and he was stabbed by BNP activists.

BNP candidate Shafiqul Haque Milan claimed Miraj was a Chhatra Dal activist and supporters of Ayen Uddin killed him

Mohonpur police officer-in-charge Abul Hossain said Miraj died in a clash between two groups and he could not confirm his political identity, reports New Age correspondent in Rajshahi.

In Chandina, Cumilla 7, a voter named Md Mujibur Rahman, son of Surat Ali from Inderchar village, was shot dead by police while he was trying to snatch the ballot box.

Assistant sub-inspector Wahid Ripon, the duty officer of Chandina police station, said police shot injured the Liberal Democratic Party supporter when he was trying to flee with the ballot box.

Mujibur died in the hospital.

In Nangalkot, A BNP activist Bacchu Mia, 45, died in a clash, said Nagalkot police Station sub-inspector Ali Ashraf.

In Pekua of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Abdullah Faruk, 23, was killed in a clash between rival groups.

Nine others were also injured in the incident, Mohammad Saber, a physician of Pekua Upazila Health Complex confirmed the incident.

New Age correspondent in Brahmanbaria reports, a man died in a clash in at Rajgarh Government Primary School centre after a clash between rival groups.

The victim was identified as Israil Mia, 30.

Brahmanbaria superintendent of police Anwar Hossain Khan said supporters of Awami League and BNP locked in a clash at the centre to establish supremacy and at time Awami League’s candidate RAM Ubaidul Muktadir Chowdhury also went there. The BNP supporters cordoned off him and he sought police’s intervention as gunshots were bring fired, he said.

Anwar said police brought the situation under control firing gunshots.

‘During the clash one died being hit by bullet,’ the police super said but did elaborate whose bullet caused the death.

Brahmanbaria district BNP general secretary Zahirul Haque claimed Israil was a BNP activist and the district Awami League general secretary Al Mamun also claimed that he was an activist of Awami League.

A tripartite clash between Awami League, BNP and supporters of an independent candidate locked in clashes in Patiya upazila Chattogram, leaving a minor boy Abu Sadek dead.

Additional Superintendent of Police Afruzul Haque Tutul confirmed the death.

He said that around 10:00am the incident took place at South Maliara Govt Primary School centre Pashchim Maliapara area of Patiya upazila under Chattogram-12.

Tutul said the family member of Sadek, son of Abul Kashem of South Maliara, are BNP supporters.

During the clash, Sadek fell in the middle of the clash and died, he said.

In Bogura, an activist of Awami League Azizul Islam, 30, died and union council member Nazmul Huda Duel got injured in an attack at Bagail in Paikar union of Kahalu upazila on Sunday noon.

Kahalu police officer-in-charge Shawkat kabir said Azizul died in an attack of BNP supporters as he tried to resist attempts to occupy polling centre.

The BNP candidate for Bogura 4 Mosharaf Hossain denied the allegation of attacking Awami League supporters and attempting to occupy polling centre.

An on-duty Ansar man was killed when he was allegedly shot by supporters of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Begumganj, Noakhali, confirmed Noakhali police super Ilias Sharif.

In Narsingdi, Milan Miah, 35, an Awami League polling agent, was hacked to death allegedly by supporters of an independent candidate at Kundarpara Primary School centre in Shibpur of Narsingdi 3 constituency around 12:30pm, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Shibpur Police Station.

In Tanore of Rajshahi, Mosadder Ali, 40, organising secretary of Awami League ward 8 in Panchandar union, died during a clash between BNP and Awami League activists over capturing Mohammadpur High School polling station of Rajshahi 1 constituency, said officer-in-charge Rezaul Islam of Tanore police station.

In Sylhet, Balaganj upazila unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal general secretary Sayem Ahmad Sohel was gunned down by police at Azizpur Government Primary School centre in Gauripur of Balaganj at around 2:30pm.

Balaganj police officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman said police had opened fire on Sayem when he was fleeing along with a ballot box at around 2:30pm.

In Gazipur, Liakat Hossain, an Awami League leader and former vice-president of Kazi Azimuddin College Students Union, was stabbed to death at Harinal in Gazipur.

Quoting Liakat’s brother Ershad Hossain, Gazipur police officer-in-charge Samir Sutra Dhar said the local activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal stabbed Liakat indiscriminately at a polling centre around 2:30pm, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

New Age correspondent in Jashore reported Shamsur Rahman Mollah,75, a polling agent of BNP’s candidate was lynched on his way to at Pathalia Madrassah polling station in Abhaynagar.

BNP leaders said activists of Awami League launched an attack at the polling centre and Shamshur sustained injuries in the head.

Abhaynagar police officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain said rivals of Shamsur lynched him when he was going to Pathalia Madrassah polling centre.

In Biral of Dinajpur, an elderly man died falling down when activists of Awami League and BNP were chasing each other outside Shahar Gram Mandal Para Government Primary School centre around noon.

The victim is Kina Mohammad, 65, son of Chandu Mohammad of Uttar Lakshmipur in Biral.

Witnesses said supporters of BNP leader Hasan Ali and Swechchhasebak League leader Abdur Rahman Murad were chasing each other outside the polling centre. Kina Mohammad was returning home after casting vote at that time. An afraid Kina fell down on the street and sustained head injuries and died afterwards. The officer-in-charge of Biral police ATM Golam Rasul said Kina Mohammad died from heart failure and there was no incident of chase there.
