A Dhaka court on Sunday sent former minister Nazmul Huda to jail in a graft case.
Dhaka Special Judge Court 3 judge HM Ruhul Imran of passed the order denying his bail prayer after Nazmul appeared before the court seeking bail in a bribery case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in 2007.
The commission on March 21, 2007, filed a case with Dhanmondi police station against Nazmul and his wife Sigma Huda for taking Tk 2.40 crore as bribe from Meer Zahir Hossain, managing director of a construction firm.
On August 27, the same year, a special court sentenced Nazmul Huda to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and Sigma Huda to three years’ imprisonment.
The couple, later, filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the verdict.
Following their appeal, the High Court on March 20, 2011 acquitted the couple of the corruption charges. The court also discharge the review petition filed by the appellant.
Later, the commission filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against the High Court order.
The Appellate Division on December 1, 2014, scrapped the acquittal and asked the High Court to hold a fresh hearing on their appeal.
The Appellate Division also asked Nazmul to surrender to the lower court in a bribery case.
