Bangladeshi origin British citizen killed in rehab centre in Moulvibazar

A young man named Jalal Uddin, a Bangladeshi origin British citizen, has allegedly been beaten to death at a rehabilitation centre in Moulvibazar.

The body of the deceased had many injury marks.

The incident took place at Sreemangal's Uddipan drug rehabilitation centre in Moulvibazar.

No one in the treatment centre was to be found after the incident. Twenty-two drug addicts, who were under treatment there, have fled the facility.

According to police and the family of the deceased –Jalal Uddin, son of the late Gias Uddin, from the Taftibag area in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district– the deceased came to Bangladesh seven to eight months ago.

Due to his drug addiction, he had been admitted to the Uddipan Drug Healing Centre and was brought back home on December 24, 2018,after two weeks of treatment. However, Jalal was readmitted to the same rehabilitation centre for further treatment on December 29.

Mother of the deceased Rukhsana Akter said:"On Sunday, January 6, around 7:30pm, we were informed by Uddipan officials that my son was feeling ill during his stay at the drug healing centre. We rushed to Sylhet and found my son's dead body inside an ambulance in front of the rehabilitation centre main gate. Officials of Uddipan were nowhere to be found."

Moulvibazar model police station Sub-Inspector Taposh Das confirmed the matter and said: "We recovered the body and sent it to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital Morgue for autopsy. The autopsy report will be available very soon. Necessary steps will be taken upon further investigation."

The reporter tried to contact the Uddipan rehabilitation centre officials but was unable to reach them. They have been missing since the incident.

Jalal's uncle Emdadul Haque said: "Uddipan officials lied to us about the cause of death of my nephew. Members of the Uddipan rehab centre killed have killed Jalal by brutally beating him to death. I want justice for my nephew."
