One killed as RMG workers continue protests for wage hike

A garment worker was killed and 100 others injured in clashes between police and apparel workers in Savar, Dhaka and Gazipur as they continued demonstration for third consecutive day on Tuesday for wage hike.

The victim is identified as Sumon Miah, 22, a finishing section operator of Anlima Yarn Dying Ltd at Ulail died from a gunshot wound on the left side of his chest.

Workers alleged that Sumon died in police firing.

Industrial police director general Abdus Salam admitted that a worker was killed on the day but he denied that the death was caused by police firing.

He suspected that miscreants might kill him to create unrest at the industrial belt.

At least 50 people were injured in clashes during demonstrations in Dhaka and Savar, our correspondent reports quoting witnesses and police.

The workers staged demonstration in the city’s Uttarkhan, Dakhshinkhan, Abdullahpur, Rokeya Sarani, Pallabi areas, Hemayetpur in Savar and Konabari in Gazipur and carried out vandalism at several factories in the Uttarkhan and Dakhshinkhan areas, creating panic among the local people.

At Holan of Dakkhinkhan in the city, several hundred readymade garment workers clashed with the staff of Nipa Group garment factories that left at least 10 injured from both the side.

Witnesses said the workers tried to demonstrate to press home their demand of wage hike proportionately in all graders but the factory staff obstructed them leading the clash.

Agitated workers set fire on a motorcycle and some equipment of the factory.

Nipa Group executive director Syed Mahmudul Islam said outsiders attacked on the factory halting their production for the third consecutive day.

Additional police and Rapid Action Battalion had been deployed at the factory to control any untoward incident.

In Savar, at least 40 people were injured in clashes during demonstrations at Hemayetpur.

Police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators in the area.

Workers of garment factories of Rokeya Sarani and Pallabi area also staged demonstration that halted vehicular movement in the areas for several hours since morning.
