RMG workers continue demo for wage hike

Apparel workers continued demonstration for wage hike at Mirpur in the capital and Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, for the fifth consecutive day on Thursday.

Police said several hundred workers from Starling Group garment factories, Sharmin Group’s AM Design, Yagi Group, Maksuda and other factories at Jamgora went out of their respective factories in the morning.

The workers at Kathgora blockaded Jirabo-Bishmail road to press home their demands.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Syed Mamun Mustafa said workers from different factories blockaded road at Shewrapara in the capital.

Workers at Kalshi in Mirpur also demonstrated for wage hike.

Protesters said in November 2018, the monthly minimum gross wage of apparel workers in the seventh grade was increased to Tk 8,000 from Tk 5,300. But the wages in other grades did not increase at the same rate.

They also said the wages should be increased proportionately in all the grades without any delay.
