At least five people were killed and three others injured as a Sylhet-bound microbus carrying a bridegroom and his relatives hit a tree on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Birpasha of Bijaynagar in Brahmanbaria on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified Hasan Jamal, 32, son of Nuruzzaman of South Goran of Dhaka, Apu Mia, 30, and his wife Jumur Begum, 25, Razin Salehin Liton, 28, and Parash Miah of the same area.
They were going to Sylhet to attend a weeding party.
Khatihata highway police outpost officer-in-charge Md Hossain Sarker said a speeding microbus hit a road side tree after losing control and fell into a roadside ditch, leaving five people dead on the spot and three others including the bridegroom injured. Police arrested microbus driver Nabir Ali.
Being informed a team of fire service personnel from Madhabpur station rushed the spot and took the bodies and the injured people to Madhabpur upazila health complex.
Madhabpur upazila health complex in-charge Ishtiaq Mamun said one of the passengers died at the hospital and four others died on the spot.
Three of the injured are under treatment at the health complex and one critically injured passenger was airlifted to Dhaka, he added.
