Suspected drug trader killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.

The incident took place in the Nhilla Union of Teknaf upazila around 5:30am on Monday.

The deceased- Shamsul Alam alias Burmaiya Shamsu, 30, was one of the listed yaba traders according to the list by Home Ministry and has 10 drug related cases filed against him, police claimed.

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das told, “Based on tip-off, we conducted a drive in the Shikderpara area of the union and arrested Shamsul.”

He said, sensing the presence of the police, his associates opened fire on the police and tried to take Shamsul away, forcing the police to strike back in self defence.

As the drug traders managed to escape, police found the bullet-riddled body of Shamsul, who died on his way to the Teknaf hospital, he added.

Three law enforcement members- Teknaf police station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Russell, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Foyez and Alamgir Hossain were also injured in the incident.

Police have recovered two local guns, 20,000 yaba pills from the crime scene.

The OC further said: “His body has been kept in the Cox’s Sadar Hospital for autopsy. A case has been filed with the Teknaf police station regarding this case under related law.”
