Physically-challenged Tara Mia gets HC bail

The High Court Division on Wednesday granted a six-week bail to Tara Mia, a physically-challenged man who lives on alms, in a case filed for ‘attacking’ police in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj on December 28 last.

The HC bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin and Justice Md Jahangir Hossain also granted bail to 49 other people in the case for the same period.

Barrister Md Abidul Haque, who along with Advocate Saiful Islam stood for the accused in the case, said the court asked them to surrender before the Sunamganj lower court on expiry of their bail. “I told the court that Tara Mia is one of the examples of fictitious and illegal cases filed across the country,” he said.

The lawyer also said Tara Mia who is a beggar and unable to move his right arm which is deformed was accused of assaulting police.

Sub-inspector of Jamalganj Police Station Tariqul Islam filed the case under the Special Powers Act accusing 52 named and 70 unnamed people of attacking police on December 28, just two days before the December-30 election.

According to the case statement, police conducted a drive in Mallikpur Bazar area of Jamalganj upazila on information that a group of people was planning to commit acts of sabotage at a polling station there.

As the law enforcers reached the spot, the accused launched an attack on them, it said.
