Road crashes killed 4,439 in Bangladesh in 2018

A total of 4,439 people were killed and 4,425 others injured in 3,103 incidents of road crashes last year, Nirapad Sarak Chai said in a report today.

Ilias Kanchan, founder of road safety campaigning group Nirapad Sarak Chai revealed the statistics at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital.

The statistics was significantly lesser the number reported by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity a few days ago which said 7,221 people were killed last year.

On the note of his statistics, Kanchan said he is unaware about how “Jatri Kalyan Samity” prepared its report and said: “We developed our report as per our methods.”

He called upon the government “to declare a war” against road crashes and save countrymen.

Replying to a query, he said: “The government doesn’t hold trial of the such road accidents because they fear owners and workers of the transport vehicles.”

Kanchan pointed out illiterate drivers, faulty vehicles, weak traffic management system, careless people and lack of legal actions as causes of the fatalities.
