Wife to die for killing Rangpur PP Rathish Chandra

A Rangpur court on Tuesday handed down death sentence to Snigdha Sarker Deepa in the murder case of the public prosecutor and ruling Awami League leader Rathis Chandra Bhowmic.

Senior District and Sessions Judge ABM Nizamul Haque handed down the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom in the noon.

Public prosecutor Abdul Malek said statements of some 37 witnesses were recorded and prosecution ended on January 21 in the case.

The court on October 21 accepted the charge sheet of the case and passed the order of the trial.

The lone alive criminal of the case, Snigdha Sarker Deepa was brought before the court in the morning amid tight security.

The main accused, Kamrul Islam committed suicide on November 10 in Rangpur jail.

Abdul Malek pleaded as the state lawyer and state-employed defence lawyer Mohammad Ariful Islam Swapon defended.

Rathish, a public prosecutor at the special judge’s court in Rangpur, was killed over extramarital affairs between his wife Snigdha Sarkar Dipa and Kamrul Islam on last March 29 at his house Tajhat Mollapara of the city.

On March 29, Snigdha fed Rathis ten sedative tablet mixing with food to make him senseless. Later, she along with Kamrul killed Rathis by strangulating him. They kept the body in a trunk and later dumped it to his brother’s abandoned house at Mollapara.

On the night of April 3, the law enforcers recovered the body digging out a hole at the abandoned house.

Sushanto Bhowmic, brother of Rathis, filed a murder case with local police station.

Police arrested Kamrul Islam and Snigdha Sarker Deepa assistant teachers of Tajhat High School of the city.
